Air Handling Unit (AHU) Checklist Description

What is air handling unit in HVAC?

An Air Handling Unit (AHU) is used to re-condition and circulate air as part of a heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system. The basic function of the AHU is to take in outside air, re-condition it and supply it as fresh air to a building.

AHU, which is Air Handling Unit is an appliance used to circulate air. HVAC is Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning system. HVAC is the central unit to which AHU is connected. AHU is only a part of HVAC and as such there is hardly any difference between then two.

The air handling unit (AHU) is the heart of central air conditioning. It collects outside air and room air, removes dust and other particles from the collected air, adjusts the temperature and humidity and then supplies comfortable and refreshing air-conditioned air into the rooms through ducts.

Air Handler Preventive Maintenance

Maintenance of Air Handling Unit should include:

  • Ensuring the unit and its associated plants are secure
  • Assessing the general conditions of the unit
  • Checking the unit for noise and vibration
  • Checking all AHU function and fan motors
  • Inspecting wiring for damage or loose connections
  • Cleaning the AHU interior
  • Lubricating motor and blower bearing
  • Ensuring cleanliness of the associated ductwork
  • Checking motor belt and pulley to make sure they are working properly
  • Changing of belts, pulleys, pre-filters and bag filters if necessary
